Door to Satisfaction, The
Heart Advice of a Tibetan Buddhist Master
Lama Zopa Rinpoche, Author

In this new edition of a classic book, Lama Zopa Rinpoche reveals the essential meaning of an ancient text that he discovered in his retreat cave high in the Himalayas. This text was Opening the Door to Dharma, composed in the fifteenth century by a follower of the Kadampa tradition. Lama Zopa was so moved and enlightened by the text that he declared that only after reading it did he understand the true meaning of practicing Dharma. He has based an entire line of thought-training teachings on it and from it brings forth a powerful message in this book.

Lama Zopa Teaches:
‘What is called "I" is the object to be abandoned forever; what is called "others"—even one sentient being—is the object to be cherished forever. This is why living your life for others - dedicating your life to even one sentient being—gives the greatest enjoyment and the most interesting life. Real happiness in life starts when you cherish others. Living your life for others, cherishing them with loving-kindness and compassion, is the door to happiness, the door to enlightenment.’

Another excerpt from the book:
‘Self-cherishing is a dictatorship. It is a dictatorship meant to benefit the self but one that results in only problems and failure. It is not logical. Check, "Why do I cherish myself? Why do I think that I'm more important than all the numberless other sentient beings? Why do I think I'm so precious?" There is not one valid reason for self-cherishing. Though we can give many reasons why we should cherish others, we cannot find one reason why we should cherish our self. There is nothing important or precious about the I. Just like you, other sentient beings want happiness and do not want suffering. Others are numberless; you are just one person. Your own self-importance is completely lost when you think of the numberless others. It is nothing. Even if you are born in hell, you are only one person, so there's nothing to be depressed about. Even if you achieve liberation from samsara, you are only one person, so there's no reason to get excited. When you think of the numberless others who, like you, want happiness and do not want suffering, you become completely insignificant. Therefore, in your life, there is nothing to do other than to work for others, to cherish others. With this attitude, work for other sentient beings with your body, speech, and mind. There is nothing more important in your life than this.’
