The Library of Tibetan Classics is a special series being developed by the Institute of Tibetan Classics aimed at making key classical Tibetan texts part of the global literary and intellectual heritage. Eventually comprising thirty-two large volumes, the collection will contain over two hundred distinct texts by more than a hundred of the best-known Tibetan authors. These texts have been selected in consultation with the preeminent lineage holders of all the schools and other senior Tibetan scholars to represent the Tibetan literary tradition as a whole. The works included in this defined series span more than a millennium and cover the vast expanse of classical Tibetan knowledge—from the core teachings of the specific schools to such diverse fields as ethics, philosophy, linguistics, medicine, astronomy and astrology, folklore, and history.

Wisdom is honored to publish this series in collaboration with Thupten Jinpa, general editor and founder of the Institute of Tibetan Classics, which was established for the express purpose of making these classic works part of the literary heritage of humankind. Parallel Tibetan critical editions of each volume are available for specialists who wish to compare with the Tibetan original, and page references of the Tibetan text are provided in each translation.

“This new series...is a landmark in the study of Tibetan culture in general and Tibetan Buddhism in particular. Each volume contains a lucid introduction and outstanding translations that, while aimed at the general public, will benefit those in the field of Tibetan Studies immensely as well.”—Leonard van der Kuijp, Harvard University
“An invaluable set of translations by highly competent scholar-practitioners.”—Jeffrey Hopkins, University of Virginia
“Erudite in all respects, this series is at the same time accessible and engagingly translated. As such, it belongs in all college and university libraries as well as in good public libraries. A truly extraordinary spiritual and literary accomplishment.”—Janice Willis, Wesleyan University
“How wonderful that these masterpieces of Tibet’s vast spiritual and literary heritage, so very recently in danger of being lost forever, are now being made widely available. The publication of this extraordinary series—carefully selected, translated, and edited under Geshe Thupten Jinpa’s expert guidance—is a momentous achievement...contributing enormously to our understanding of every facet of Tibetan Buddhist culture.”—Sogyal Rinpoche, author of The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying
“The Library of Tibetan Classics brings together the essential texts of Tibetan literature. Of excellent quality and great value to scholars, the translations are accessible to nonspecialists as well, and thus allow a wide audience to gain access to the treasures of the Tibetan tradition. A truly extraordinary accomplishment.”—Georges Dreyfus, Williams College
