Thirty vibrant watercolors illustrate this delightful children’s story about the importance of using nature’s gifts wisely so that our precious environment will be available to share in the future.

Praise & Reviews

"Respect for the earth is the theme of this light-hearted fable set in a far-away kingdom in India. The queen gives Ananda, a very wise man, a bag of gold for his advice. The king, who is suspicious, asks Ananda what he did with the gold. The wise man replies that he bought cloth to make clothes for poor people, took their old clothes and made them into quilts, then took the old quilts and made them into pillows, etc. Each page ends with the king asking Ananda what happened to the throw-aways. This question is intriguing and prompts readers to turn the page for the answer. After explaining how each discarded item is made into something useful (the final product is used to build homes), Ananda tells the king that everything in the universe is a gift to be shared. Children will enjoy this Buddhist fairy tale and its brightly-colored sketches as they learn about another culture and to be concerned about the earth."—Today's School Media Specialist
